A Change Will Do You Good

A Change Will Do You Good

FEBRUARY 1, 2016 / SARAJESSOP

It’s February 1st. Aquarius has officially moved out of its beloved home for the past 5 years at the Sunset Ridge Shopping Center. Per my lease agreement, my last day was January 31st. It’s been a week of moving assembly lines, unpredictable emotions, and my “where are you moving to?” and “why are you moving?” response on repeat. A complete roller coaster to be honest.

I decided not to renew my lease at Sunset Ridge because Aquarius had outgrown that center. I am firm believer in change, evolution, and growth in every capacity. Aquarius is not the same store as it was 5 years ago when it first opened and it could possibly not be the same store in another year, two years, or 5 years. We had evolved beyond the shopping center and it wasn’t a great fit for the kind of store I was seeing Aquarius become. However, that does not change the fact that Aquarius would not be who she is if it wasn’t for Sunset Ridge. That gratitude for the last 5 years evoked a sadness I did not anticipate. It felt like moving out of your childhood home. The next home is going to be so kick ass, but Aquarius grew up in this one and I didn’t want to discredit the success, opportunity, and memories that came out of Sunset Ridge.

It was such an exciting feeling watching the sign go up in October 2010. One I won’t ever forget or replace.

And in the blink of an eye, we made it to 1 year in business! Our opening party was a benefit for Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum and that set the stage for our anniversary parties and the store to be a gallery and platform for local art. I have known Franco Mondini-Ruiz for a while and it was only befitting to bring his energy to our 1 Year Anniversary Party in 2011.

I designed the store with this white handmade tree as a design focal point. The tree was decorated for seasons or events and I forged an amazing relationship with Alamo, Plants, and Petals. Unfortunately the tree is retiring temporarily. It does not fit in the new store due to its size, but hopefully it can return in some capacity down the road. I’ll have to find something else to decorate!

Fashion Night Out at Aquarius! It was a great event and I was sad when NYC decided to do away with the event. Aquarius never shyed away from hosting a party.

And then came 2 years in business! The event was a multitude of characters with Franco Mondini Ruiz again but we invited local artists Holly Hein and Bryson Brooks as well ROARKEnyc jewelry to the party! I was told that night that if I made it to two years, I was here to stay.

This was a fun event! Fiesta anything in San Antonio is always a blast and everyone has a party because of Fiesta somehow. Continuing with supporting local artists, Tracy Williams joined our gallery walls. She has since become one of my dear friends and I am incredibly proud to have given her a stage to show her talent. This party also introduced Casey Wiatrek and KOI Salon as a new business within Aquarius. The addition of Casey’s salon was one of my husband’s best ideas and the fun isn’t ending because of the move: KOI will be in the space next to me at The Village center.

I’m not really comfortable in front of the camera, but I had a blast doing a shoot for the first issue of Scout Guide in San Antonio. This photo really shows the colorfulness of Aquarius. I am excited and curious to see what personality color creates in the new location as we are going with new wall colors and design.

Our four year party was exactly what the invite says: an evening of glitz and color. To compliment Tracy’s abstract, we introduced Greg Mannino and his glittered vintage pieces. The place looked like a beautiful disco for a long time and our customers loved Greg’s work as it is playful and not like anything you’ve seen before!

It was a bittersweet 5 year anniversary party as I knew it would be the last party at Sunset Ridge. But I had a drag queen perform “Happy Birthday” and a Beyonce medley so I think we went out with a bang! No you wouldn’t think of a drag queen at a boutique party, but I’m not your typical boutique owner either.

I don’t like to give too much away all at once but I will share today our new logo. This will be going up on the exterior of our new location soon and our re-opening date is TBA asap. I hate giving a date during construction as it may change due to the many hands involved with completing our new home but it will be this month, February, during the Zodiac time of Aquarius because when else would we re-open?

This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius…the next, the new Age of Aquarius.

Cheers,
